People, Plants, Landscapes

lots about plants we can eat, how to grow them and making landscapes edible.

All these plants produce food (strictly speaking!) including the Black Taro, the Chartreuse Ornamental Sweet Potato and the Canna Lilies but I mostly like looking at, and hanging out with, these wonders of the Tropics #tropicalfoliage #ornamentalsweetpotato #monsteraleaf #blacktaro #cannalilies #shadyspot

We extended Kit Duncan Jones’ kitchen garden at Northcote Pool today with a quick and dirty planting of ginger, turmeric, lemon grass and sweet potatoes. We’ve had a formal site induction too so the Burnley Volunteer Hort Team for YMCA aquatic centres is now officially up and running! #ediblelandscape #urbanagriculture #kitchengardens #ymcaaustralia #northcotepool #urbanhorticulture #studentvolunteers #onthetools

In the middle of the city at the William Angliss Institute, an edible landscape sanctuary! Great job @edibleedendesign and @woy_kcd_hashtagmeatbag ! #ediblelandscape #citygarden #gardenoasis #williamanglissinstitute #urbanagriculture

Young Cassava in front of big clump of two year old Turmeric plants. Although marginal in Melbourne, Cassava can grow optimally at 40 degrees Celsius; given the summer we’re having perhaps it has some kind of future at our latitude #cassava #manihotesculenta #climatechangeadaptation #manioc #turmericplant #curcumalonga #demonstrationgarden #melbournegardens #urbanagriculture #burnleyfieldstation #novelcrops #novelcropsproject

Today I found sticky fruit ID labels at the bottom of an old compost pile where even bones were more decomposed ! Best to stick them straight onto the top of the door jam of the kitchen where they can persist for eternity! #compost #foreignobjects #stickylabelsoneverything #plasticeverywhere #waronwaste #nothingissacred

My Melbourne Mango Madness - the seeds inside the ‘stone’ once you’ve finished gorging are a real surprise. I’m trying to germinate one in water still in its capsule and the rest sown in potting mix. If they grow they’ll probably end up as indoor plants...or will they? #mangoseed #mangiferaindica #anarcadiaceae #propagationproject #homehorticulture #pushingtheboundaries #possiblydelusional

Enset Bananas are mind blowingly magnificent and interesting, and today after a four year wait I harvested their orange bananas with big black seeds for the first time (with a yellow Cavendish for contrast). The big underground storage corm is the edible portion not the banana itself but these seeds represent a 2018 propagation project for the Novel Crops project with plenty more seed on the way #enseteventricosum #enset #plantsofethiopia #novelcrops #novelcropsproject #panc #ediblelandscape #musaceae #agrobiodiversity #agroecology #bananaseeds #propagation #getreadystudents

Edible leaves from four aquatic, semi-aquatic or bog plants - Fish Mint with the flowers, Water Cress at the sides, Vietnamese Mint at the bottom and fragrant Ngo Om in the middle (which is like citrus curry in a good way), all easy to grow in pots, tubs and buckets without drainage holes #houttuyniacordata #nasturtiumofficinale #persicariaodorata #limnophilaaromatica #asianherbs #ricepaddyherb #ediblewaterplants #novelcrops
