Just got the new rain gauge in! It’s been bone dry for eight weeks I hope this new toy overflows this afternoon. The cloud shot is from this morning overlooking the Brewery smoke stack in Abbotsford #raingauge #measuringrainfall #precipitation #cloudsbringrain #industriallandscape #backyardscience #citizenscience #couldntbemoreexcited #goodbyesummer

A perfect planting for the southern autumn equinox- late season in-field cuttings of Oca/New Zealand Yams. These unusual plants only start tuber production after equinox so we’re planting them densely. If successful we hope this crop will go to a Burnley student run stall at the melbournefarmersmarkets #happyequinox #oxalistuberosa #lostcropsoftheincas #ancientfood #plantsofsouthamerica #novelcrops #novelcropsproject #dryanddusty #shovelleaners #someoneworking #heavymulch #shortdayplants #burnleyfieldstation

Every year I look forward to these autumn flowers of #hopniss; the edible part is the plant’s tuber - wisteria-like flowers, the added bonus #americangroundnut #apios #autumnflowers #nativeamericanfood #indigenousfoods #fabaceae #climbingplant #riparianplants #superplant #setandforget #perennialedibles #novelcrops #novelcropsproject

First harvest of Jicama bean roots, sweet and crisp and delicious with chilli, lime and salt. These were pot-grown in my garden and squashed together but I’m hoping for big turnip shaped ones out of the ground in late April #jicama #pachyrhizus #mexicanyambean #asianveggies #novelcrops #novelcropsproject #legumes #plantsofmexico #panc

Happy times if you’re a #plantnerd! A rare filled fruit (the swollen green ‘seed’) at the bottom right of this Lotus pod. They rarely pollinate successfully in Melbourne so this must have been a lucky combination of temperature and pollinator. Definitely going to try to germinate this with the Famous Final Five students in Plant Production and Culture #lotuspods #lotusseed #nelumbonucifera #pollination #carpellaryreceptacle #looksalien #fromanotherplanet #notofthisearth #smallwins #burnleynursery #studentfuntimes
